Landscape design for horse farms
An equestrian property has to be beautiful from the kitchen window and correct from the saddle. Most of what makes it correct is invisible in photographs — it lives in the grading plan, the footing section, and the fence geometry. This is how we draw a farm that works.
Start with water, not with the arena
Every failed horse farm fails the same way: water goes where nobody decided it should. Mud at the gates, a soft arena corner, a paddock that stays wet until noon. So the first sheet in any equestrian design is a site survey — boundary, levels, and drainage ways — and every line that follows answers to it. Swales, rain gardens, and a pond that earns its keep move each storm deliberately across the property, so the working areas are dry by morning.
Siting the arena
An arena is the most expensive rectangle on the farm, and the hardest to move. Siting it well means balancing four things at once: drainage (crown the base, keep it out of the low ground), light (afternoon sun angles and glare at the ends where you actually ride), wind, and sightlines — ideally you can watch the work from the house. A 100′ × 200′ arena wants a laser-graded base; the tolerance a rider feels is smaller than the tolerance most excavators are used to.
The footing section — the drawing nobody frames
Footing is a sandwich, and every layer has a job. Drawn to scale, dimensioned, and specified, the section becomes a contract the contractor can be held to:
Three inches of fiber-blend footing for cushion and rebound; four inches of compacted base for shape; a geotextile layer so the two never mix; six inches of free-draining stone; and a perforated drain at a one-percent fall to carry the water away. Skip the geotextile and the arena is fine for a year — then the stone migrates, the surface pumps, and you rebuild it. The section is cheaper than the do-over.
Paddocks: mud is a design failure
Mud is not weather; it is circulation that was never designed. Paddock layout starts with how horses and people actually move — from stable to turnout, turnout to arena, arena to wash rack — and hardens the routes that get daily traffic. High-traffic zones near gates and waterers get the same base-and-geotextile treatment as the arena, at a fraction of the depth. The goal is simple to say and rare to see: every paddock reachable in street shoes, in February.
Pasture on the land's contours
Rotational grazing is drawn, not improvised. Laying paddock divisions along the land's contours — rather than in a grid that ignores them — slows runoff, keeps the grass in front of the horses, and gives the farm the settled look of fields that were always there. Shade trees are placed where horses actually stand, not where they look best from the road, and set back from fence lines so limbs and rails never meet.
Fence geometry a veterinarian would approve
- Rounded corners — no dead-end angles where a horse can be trapped.
- Gates hung to swing clear of the traffic pattern, never into it.
- No nails proud, no wire where sight lines fail at a gallop.
- Lane widths sized for the tractor that will actually mow them.
Arrival: the trailer test
A farm entrance has to pass two tests at once. It should slow a visitor down and present the house the way a drawing would — and it must let a truck and six-horse trailer enter, turn, and leave without a three-point turn. We draw the turning radii before we draw the allée, and the farrier, the vet, and the hay delivery all park where they should, the first time.

Frequently asked questions
How much land does a riding arena and turnout actually need?
A 100′ × 200′ arena with working margins wants about an acre once you include drainage and access; comfortable turnout is commonly planned at one to two acres per horse, adjusted for soil and rotation. The honest answer is drawn, not quoted — it depends on your land's slopes and water.
What makes arena footing drain?
The layers under it. A crowned, laser-graded compacted base over geotextile and free-draining stone, with perforated drains at a consistent fall, moves water out of the profile before it reaches the surface. Footing material alone cannot fix a base that holds water.
When should landscape design start on a horse farm?
Before the first structure is sited — ideally alongside the architect. The arena, barn, paddocks, and house compete for the same well-drained, gently graded ground; deciding their positions together is the difference between a farm that works and one that fights itself for decades.
Do you work with existing barns and arenas?
Yes. Many commissions begin with a property that already works in parts — the drawing brings the arrival, drainage, planting, and pasture into one composition around what's there.
